Overview: Yahoo is the oldest and still the most popular directory service for searching the web

Originally launched in 1994, Yahoo! is one of the oldest directory based search engine. Yahoo does not rely on spiders or any automated tools to populate its database, but rather uses people to compile large directories of websites. Yahoo! by far is one of the smallest databases but being compiled by people has served to provide fresh quality websites and has made it one of the most popular websites on the Internet since its inception.

Submission & Ranking Process

People are not robots Since Yahoo! does not use robots, everything indexed into Yahoo! is done by people. No META tags, ALT image tags, HTML comments or image maps will help boost your ranking here. The best chance on getting your site listed is to describe your website as accurate as possible. The final decision rests up to the editor who reviews your website so your content must impress them to be worthy of adding you to their database. Google now provides secondary listings for Yahoo when no results are returned by Yahoo's index.

Selecting Categories When you submit a site to Yahoo, you're allowed to select two categories: A primary category and an additional, related category of your choice. The best way to determine which category your site belongs in is to perform a search for a keyword which you feel is related to the content of your website. Once you do this, review the suggested category matches returned and explore the available listings within each category. Secondary categories are best suited for regional listings. For example, if you're a flower vendor in Miami, we would suggest adding a primary category relating to flowers and an alternate category related to flower vending in the Florida region.

Ranking Priorities There are a few factors which affect how Yahoo returns results: Title, Domain Name, Description. Keywords which are found in your title will be ranked higher than keywords found only in your description and similarly keywords within your domain name will be ranked higher.

Selecting Titles Yahoo reviewers love to cut down your title to only your company name. The best way around this is try and integrate keywords into your company name such as 'Acme Limited Racing Cars'. Your company name in this example is Acme Limited and you stuck in the keywords "Racing" and "Cars". In practice, Yahoo! will shorten your title as much as possible.

Selecting Descriptions Similar to titles, Yahoo reviewers will want to minimize your description. Yahoo claims to have a limit of 25 words on descriptions, but in practice, this is much less. Try to avoid commas, and try to write the description into a single sentence. If you split it into two or more sentences, chances are Yahoo will remove the latter sentences automatically.

Submission Time Getting listed in Yahoo! can take anywhere between 4-8 weeks. All submissions must be done manually and through the appropriate category.

Paid Submissions Yahoo now offers an express submission service which will get you a guaranteed response whether your site will be indexed in Yahoo or not within two (2) weeks. This service costs $199 and can be ordered directly from the Suggest A Site link from the category you would like to submit to. This service does not guarantee you will get listed, but does guarantee your application will be fast-tracked in 14 days or less.

Insider Tips Often, it takes many weeks if not months to get listed in Yahoo. One way to speed up this time is to submit to Yahoo Canada. Yahoo Canada has significantly less submissions and will therefore increase turn-around time. In addition, if your site is not Canadian, they often will forward your site to the appropriate editor in the same category in the US directory. This has the advantage of skipping the long queued waiting list and getting listed much faster. If your site is Canadian, you have the advantage of getting listed in both the Canadian and American directories automatically.

Re-Submitting Your Site If you don't see your site appearing in Yahoo! after about 6 weeks don't assume your site has been rejected. You can re-submit your site to Yahoo by:
  • Email Listings Support (preferred): url-support@Yahoo-inc.com (Include your URL and email)
  • Phone Listing Support at: (408) 731-3300 between the hours of 8:30-5:00 PST M-F
  • Resubmit your site again and add a comment during step 4 under "Final Comments" that this is a re-submission.
Comments: Be patient, Yahoo receives millions of requests every month.

Having Trouble? We get asked often what is the best way to get my site listed in Yahoo!. For additional tips on what we suggest, please see our Yahoo! FAQ and suggested tips.
